Our experience with the Gajalaxmi vending zone was quite remarkable as well as exciting. Although it was same as any other vending zone in terms of customers and stalls, but what we went through during our stay there is something that we will remember forever. The vendors there were divided in two major groups on the basis of the political motives in that zone. Our presence somehow created some sort of disagreement between them and there were a lot of arguments. We too didn't get good responses at the beginning. People were suspicious. But later on we were able to get along with them well.

The visit to Ram Mandir was a revering experience as being close to'The  Ram Mandir' there were a lot of florists. Also there were a lot of Book shops, a one stop for all bibliophiles. There were many eateries, newspaper shops, mobile repair centre and motor repair center.
This VZ was bigger and had 78 shops in all. Few shopkeepers were doubtful when we questoned them but overall the response was good.

It was a usual evening and we had geared up for our vending project. So we went and visited Maa VZ. After giving a cursory look we observed that maximum shops were 'Paan' shops and tea stalls. There were gift shops and some stationery shops even. It was good to find a motor repairing shop and saloon along with a mobile repairing shop. What amazed was that the person repairing in the mobile shop had ITI Diploma. There was also a florist among them.
That evening when we found a mix of different services being provided in the same vending zone, that catered to varying needs of the customer at the same place. Such variety beats the variety of the Malls.

People were very cooperative and none had their own house or land in Bhubhaneshwar. After interacting with these people we came came back satisfied carrying the warmth with which they had responded to our queries.

For the purpose of the study on Bhubaneswar's Vending Zones we chose three vending zones operating under the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation which include :
1) Ram Mandir Square Vending Zone, in Ward no 36, With 78 Shops
2) Gajalakshmi Vending Zone, Unit 9, in Ward no 36, With 27 shops
3) Maa Vendor Association, Housing Board Square, Unit 9, with 42 Shops.

DAY 1:
We started off from the biggest vending zone, the Ram Mandir Square Vending Zone. The Vending zone is situated besides Janpath, a busy thoroughfare, and is flanked by the Ram Mandir on the right and Big Bazaar in the front.

The vending zone typically deals with three types of goods
  1)Books and Stationery

       2)Florists

     3)Food Counters

The Vending zone is a fairly large one and we will over a period of time collect data and try to see first hand the life of the vendors and the vending zone in itself.

     signing off for now...
Till the next post ..Good Bye

Street Vending in India and elsewhere has been characterized by the debate over individual right to work and collective right to public space. Amid this backdrop the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has come up with an unique model that seeks to enable urban 'business on streets' while also making sure that the beautification and cleanliness of the city landscape is not compromised.

The concept of the vending zone as practiced in Bhubaneswar perfectly qualifies the theme of 'making market work for the poor'. This is a pioneering lead taken to develop an exclusive market for the vendors which presents all the combinations needed for conducting a healthy business.

Aesthetic & organized shops, prime locations, clean surroundings, provision of electricity and above all imparting a peace of mind and sense of security among the street vendors. The new markets now hold a legal status.

So this study is an attempt by the Students of Rural Management at "Xavier Institute of Management" to try and capture the spirit and energy that is on display despite the hardships that the vendors face every day in the process of eking out a living.

The study is being conducted under the guidance of Professor D.V.Ramana by
1) Dighir Ganguly
2) Kritarth Mishra
3) Maitreya Goswami
4) Manoj Kumar Nayak
